Lifeeee

I'm unbelievably indecisive. I can't even choose what I want for dinner most days. So when I was finishing school and had to pick what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, naturally I panicked. I was constantly changing my mind. So I went to the school's guidance counsellor who did all the tests to see what sort of career I'd be suited to. Her answer: Hairdresser. I felt robbed. I wanted something exciting, different and challenging. To me, hairdressing was 'meh', anyone could do it (no offence to any hairdressers here), in fact the only people I know who did do it, where girls who left school after their junior cert.
I remember saying it to my mam, she thought it was a great idea, which I put down to the fact that she wanted to get her hair done for free, I mentioned it to friends, who also thought it wasn't a bad idea. But not me, I wanted more. I thought I was above that, so I thought, I'll prove everyone wrong and become a zoologist (of all things I could have chosen!!). Which meant 4 years studying science in UCD. So I worked my ass off my leaving, got accepted and off I went. Two months later I was working full time in a music shop and trying again to decide what to do with my life.

So I thought I'd find the funnest course I could find and do that until I'd decided, so I chose media. I did the full 4 years got my degree, worked a small bit, and ended up back at square one, trying to decide what I want to do. I've decided. I want to be a hairdresser.

It is a 'meh' job, that anyone can do, if you let it be, but I now see that there is so much more to it, and that if you have good training, are creative and have ambition you can have an exciting, fun and very rewarding career.
I feel old trying to get into it now, but it feels nice to know what I want. Even if i did waste 7 years trying to figure it out.

  5. I have had such a hard time deciding what I want to do. I hated all the pressure that was put on me to go to school right away, and figure everything out asap. I know what I want to do now, but I'm glad I decided not to go to school while figuring it out. I knew it would have been a waste of money.
But hairdressing can be a fun and creative career! You just have to find ways to make it interesting.

I think it's very ironic how you ended up at square one...very neat. I love your blog and am following you! Tweet/message/comment me sometime I'd love to talk!
